Fragrance guides & notes
Most people do not need a collection of thirty bottles. They need one fragrance that fits their life so well that wearing anything else feels like a costume. Finding that fragrance is less about luck and more about method.
1. Start with a fragrance family, not a brand
Fragrances fall into broad families: fresh, citrus, aromatic, floral, woody, amber, and oud. Knowing which family you instinctively reach for removes 80% of the noise before you smell a single bottle.
- Fresh and citrus — clean, bright, office-safe.
- Aromatic — herbs and lavender; classic and confident.
- Woody — cedar, sandalwood, vetiver; grounded and mature.
- Amber and oriental — warm, sweet, resinous; evening energy.
- Oud and smoky — deep, intense, unmistakably present.
2. Test on skin, never on paper alone
Paper strips are useful for a first filter, but fragrance reacts with your skin's pH, oils and temperature. Always test on the inside of your wrist or forearm, and live with it for at least four hours before deciding.
3. Match it to your actual week
Think about where you spend your time. A fragrance that is perfect for a wedding may be too much for a 9am meeting. Your signature scent should work for the majority of your real life, not a fantasy version of it.
4. Let it dry down before you judge
The opening is designed to impress in the first thirty seconds. The dry down is what you will actually live with for the next eight hours. Give every candidate a full hour before you make the call.
5. Build a small rotation, not a hoard
Once you have a signature, add one warmer scent for evenings and one lighter scent for hot days. Three fragrances, chosen well, cover almost every occasion.
If you are not sure where to begin, our Signature Scents collection is built around three of the most universally loved profiles in modern perfumery — fresh amber, fruity chypre and woody aromatic.
